The project, known as the Integrated Shrimp Aquaculture Park (iSHARP), is located in Penarik, near here. Setiu is a breeding ground for the endangered river terrapins. In an interview with The Star in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, chief executive officer Dr Shahridan Faiez addressed the concerns raised by environmentalists and Setiu residents regarding the environmental impact of the project. KUALA TERENGGANU, 27 SEP 2008: The success of the Kerpan tiger prawn project in Kedah after it was taken over by Khazanah Malaysia in 2000 has given hope that a similar scheme would be successful in Terengganu.
Negotiations are under way for the project to be sited on 1,200ha of land in Setiu and Khazanah will invest RM500 million in it.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the project would be realised by next year and that approval has been given for the first stage of the development, which would involve 400ha. "When all the 1,200ha have been developed, this project will be more than twice the size of the Kerpan project in Kedah, making Setiu the country's biggest tiger prawn producer."
