Indonesia Government Bans Import of Penaeus Vaname Shrimps

Government has issued joint decree of minister of trade and fishery on June 23, 2010, which temporarily bans import of both frozen and fresh shrimps from Penaeus Vaname species.

Temporary import bank is applied to shrimp under Tariff Post HS 0306.13.00.00. Shrimps from other species, both head on and head less, meanwhile, can only be imported through certain seaports (Belawan, Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Emas, Tanjung Perak, and Soekarno-Hatta) and or airports (Polonia, Soekarno-Hatta, Juanda, and Sultan Hasanuddin).

The temporary import ban will applied for the next six months to prevent the virus attack on Indonesian shrimp. Government argued the virus has caused production and export decline of 33,000 tons or about US$330 million since 1998. "Other than that, 70% of shrimp farms in Java and outside Java have been closed down due to the virus attack," ministry of trade said in a statement yesterday.
