Repeat of 2008 Food Crisis?

Posted by: Pazreen in Untagged  on

Russia announced a 12-month extension of its grain export ban on Thursday, raising fears about a return to the food shortages and riots of 2007-08 which spread through developing countries dependent on imports.

The announcement by Vladimir Putin came as the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation called an emergency meeting to discuss the wheat shortage, and riots in Mozambique left seven dead.

A few years ago the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) issued a declaration stating that fish farming in Africa will have to expand by 250% in the next 10 years just to maintain the present per capita consumption of fish in the continent.

Booming business out of aquaculture is happening elsewhere in the world, compared to Africa where the sector is still at its infancy.

A Chinese tilapia and snakehead producer has been granted an exclusive 30-year contract to manage an aquaculture park in Qingqi, in Guangdong province.

Rongfu Aquaculture made the announcement on Monday. The local government will spend CNY 150 million (USD 22 million, EUR 17 million) to build the park, including fish ponds, upgraded water conservation, roads and utilities, according to the company.

It's summer, and off the coast of Britain anglers are enjoying a blue-grey abundance of mackerel. Barbecued, smoked, or baked in cider, this firm favourite provides a seasonal guilt-free treat, certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

But in a dispute echoing the cod wars of the 1970s, Britain and the EU are on the brink of a mackerel war with Iceland and the Faroe Islands, who have ripped up agreed quotas, unilaterally awarding themselves the lion's share of north Atlantic stock.

UK fishermen are furious; the EU is condemnatory. Those in the industry, meanwhile, claim that the dispute puts at risk not only the future of Britain's pelagic fishing industry, but the future of mackerel itself as a healthy, sustainable fish.

Last week 50 fishermen blockaded Peterhead port in Aberdeenshire, physically preventing the Faroese vessel Jupiter from offloading 1,100 tonnes of the fish to a processing plant.

Salmonella fears prompt extension of vast US egg recall

A US egg company has extended a nationwide food recall to 380 million eggs, after outbreaks of salmonella poisoning in a number of states.

Iowa-based Wright County Egg last week recalled some 228m eggs distributed under more than a dozen brand names.

The firm is part of DeCoster Farms, a family-run agribusiness.

The US Food and Drug Administration said salmonella outbreaks had increased fourfold since May. There are inquiries into the illness in 13 states.

Costco Adopts Sustainable Seafood Policy

Following a letter of concern from some of its shareholders, Costco–one of the largest wholesale food distributors in the nation–has formally begun a ‘sea change’ in its seafood procurement policies.

Citing statistics from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a 2006 Science Magazine report on over-fishing, as well as the possibility of facing additional “shareholder value” risks from depleted fish stocks, ecological impacts and regulatory changes, the shareholders urged the company to adopt a more comprehensive and robust sustainability policy.

In what can be considered to be one of the most important fisheries-related news stories of this year, Nomura Securities Co. is creating the world's first investment fund specifically targeting international fisheries-related businesses amid growing demand for seafood worldwide.

The company has said that it has judged that fishery-related businesses will grow in the long term. According to Nomura, people in the United States and Europe are becoming more health-conscious while fish demand is also expected to rise in developing economies, reports Kyodo News International.

The world's only managed investment fund exclusively for fishing or aquaculture stocks hopes to raise at least $US500 million ($554m).

Capitalising on the appetite for themed managed funds in Japan, fund manager Amundi Japan aims to put together a portfolio of marine stocks to capitalise on the increasing consumption of fish in China, Brazil and India.

Gulf seafood industry tries to shake an oily image

Those who rely on the Gulf of Mexico's rich fishing grounds say there's a new crisis brewing _ convincing skeptical consumers that the seafood they harvest and sell is safe to eat.

The Gulf's fisheries are beginning to reopen more than three months after the oil began gushing from the sea floor, but those in the seafood industry say that doesn't mean everything has returned to normal.

UN to consider promoting insect farming

Saving the planet one plateful at a time does not mean cutting back on meat, according to new research: the trick may be to switch our diet to insects and other creepy-crawlies.

The raising of livestock such as cows, pigs and sheep occupies two-thirds of the world's farmland and generates 20% of all the greenhouse gases driving global warming. As a result, the United Nations and senior figures want to reduce the amount of meat we eat and the search is on for alternatives.
